Man accused of killing 16-year-old Santa Cruz County boy in 2009 appears in Santa Cruz County Court

SANTA CRUZ — The man accused of killing a 16-year-old nearly 10 years ago appeared briefly Thursday morning in Santa Cruz County Superior Court.

Ivan Tapia Ramirez, charged with the 2009 stabbing murder of Santa Cruz High student Tyler Tenorio, waves to his family and friends attending his court appearance in March. Ramirez, a U.S. citizen with family and friends in Santa Cruz, was arrested in Durango, Mexico and extradited to the U.S. earlier this week. (Dan Coyro — Santa Cruz Sentinel file)

Ivan Ramirez Tapia gave a small, handcuffed wave to family sitting in the courtroom gallery as proceedings began.

Defense attorney Aimee Buentello asked Judge Timothy Volkmann to schedule the next court date for Tapia for 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 28 given the “amount of outstanding discovery.”

Additionally, Rosy Tapia, Tapia’s mother and witness, requested that she have an attorney appointed to her.

The matter will be addressed on Oct. 28, Volkmann said.

Ivan Ramirez Tapia is accused of stabbing and killing 16-year-old Tyler Tenorio on Oct. 16, 2009, which involved an escalating fight between two groups that erupted outside the 7-Eleven at Chestnut and Laurel streets in Santa Cruz.
