49ers release kicker McLaughlin, open roster spot

BRADENTON, Fla. — Two kickers proved one too many for a 49ers team that apparently needs a roster spot for an injury replacement, likely on defense.

Rookie Chase McLaughlin got released Tuesday after filling in three games for Robbie Gould, who hopes to rebound from a rough start (14-of-22 field-goal attempts) and finish strong for the playoff-seeking 49ers (10-2).

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA – NOVEMBER 17: San Francisco 49ers’ Chase McLaughlin (5) heads off the field following their 36-26 win over the Arizona Cardinals at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019. (Nhat V. Meyer/Bay Area News Group)

McLaughlin made 7-of-8 field-goal tries, and the one that got away was a potential game-winner that he missed in a Nov. 11 overtime loss to Seattle.

What might the 49ers do with his roster spot?
