San Jose cathedral hosts 12 days of free holiday concerts

For the 24th year, St. Joseph’s Cathedral in San Jose will host the “Season of Hope,” 12 days of free concerts Dec. 12-23.

Each night features a different group in concert from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the magnificent cathedral, which opened in 1877 and was fully restored in the late 1980s.

The arts, school and community groups donate their time. Concerts are free, but contributions to support the church’s food, shelter, medical care and job search programs are welcome.

This year’s lineup of multicultural performances:

Dec. 12: San Jose Jazz All Star Big Band (Aaron Lington, director)

Dec. 13: San Jose Youth Symphony (Yair Samet, conductor)

Dec. 14: San Jose Youth Symphony Harp Ensemble (Kristal Schwartz, conductor)

Dec. 15: San Jose State University Choraliers (Jeffrey Benson, director)

Dec. 16: San Jose Symphonic Choir (Leroy Kromm, conductor)

Dec. 17: San Jose Youth Chamber Orchestra (Anthony Quartuccio, conductor)

Dec. 18: Castillero Middle School (Corey Miller, music director; Michelle Crivello, dance director)

Dec. 19: The New Ballet School (Dalia Rawson, director)

Dec. 20: California Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (Byung Kim, conductor)

Dec. 21: Bellarmine Chamber Orchestra (Diane Wyant, music director)

Dec. 22: Bytes and Notes Sacred Christmas (Ann-Marie Tecson, music director)

Dec. 23: Harpers Hall Celtic Harps (Verlene Schermer, director)
