Seal that took a wrong turn in Redwood City is back home

They still aren’t sure how he got to that parking garage in Redwood City, but the Northern fur seal pup found alone and hungry far from home, has been returned to the ocean wild.

The seal, named Santos, was released Thursday off Point Reyes National Seashore, along with five other Northern fur seal pups, a threatened Guadalupe fur seal and a California sea lion. All had been under the care of the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.

Santos’ return to the ocean began early on Nov. 24, after Redwood City police found the young seal in the parking garage. The Marine Mammal Center was called, along with the Redwood City Fire Department, working together to rescue the seal. He was transferred to the fire station until a trained response team arrived and took him to the center.

Santos rests during rehabilitation at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. (The Marine Mammal Center)
