Suspect charged after confrontation with mayor

MARTINEZ — A man involved in a downtown altercation with Mayor Rob Schroder has been charged with four felonies in the encounter, authorities said Friday.

Elijah Anthony Dominguez, 27, was arrested Thursday after police were called to the 600 block of Main Street around 3:20 p.m. According to police, officers found Dominguez trying to place Schroeder under a citizen’s arrest.

He also claimed to be filming something for the holidays, police said. Once officers arrived, Dominguez was involved in a scuffle with them and a nearby citizen who tried to help before he was arrested.

Authorities charged Dominguez with making criminal threats; false imprisonment by violence; resisting an executive officer; and battery with injury on a police officer. Dominguez also faces a misdemeanor charge of battery. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning.

Schroder, who wasn’t injured during the incident, was not available for comment. He has been the mayor of Martinez since 2002.

A police officer suffered a minor injury while trying to detain Dominguez and was treated at a hospital, police said. A citizen who also tried to help declined medical treatment for a minor injury he also suffered.
