Skeletal human remains discovered at Joshua Tree National Park

Authorities located skeletal human remains in a remote area of Joshua Tree National Park on Friday, Dec. 20.

An outside agency analyzed photos shot there last summer and contacted the National Park Service Thursday, Dec. 19, after finding evidence of the heavily decomposed body, NPS officials said in a news release.

The remains were discovered by rangers the following day in a remote, rocky and steep location that is isolated from any trails in the Fortynine Palms Oasis area of the park. That area is southwest of the Oasis Visitor Center and the town of Twentynine Palms.
