The Year of the Rat — or the Mouse, if you prefer the slightly cuddlier connotation — lies just ahead. Here’s a sampling of more than two dozen Lunar New Year celebrations around the Bay Area, with firecrackers, dragons and lion dances galore.


Lunar New Year Celebration and Parade: 9:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 2, Albany Twin Theater, 1115 Solano Ave. Music, lion dancers, martial arts and more. Parade begins at noon at the intersection of Kains and Solano Avenues. Free. https://www.solanoavenueassn.org/events/lunar-new-year/

Chinese New Year Celebration: 3:30-5 p.m. Feb. 6, Albany Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave. Students from Cornell and Ocean View elementary schools and Sun Wei Chinese After School will present cultural Chinese songs and dances, as well as the stories of all 12 zodiac signs. Helen Loo’s Lunar New Year Concert: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 30, Foster City Library, 1000 E. Hillsdale Blvd. A soulful and eclectic performance of Chinese songs in the tradition of the late Teresa Teng, blended with other genres and cultures to reflect global peace and harmony.
