Suspect arrested in automobile burglary spree

MILPITAS – A suspect in a string of automobile burglaries in Milpitas last July is in custody, police said.

Shaquille Dumetz

Ten burglaries were reported in the parking lots of the Milpitas Square, Ulfert’s and McCarthy Ranch shopping centers on July 13, according to Milpitas police Lt. John Torrez.

In a news release, Torrez said an officer pored over security camera footage and came up with a limited description of the suspects and their vehicle. The description was then shared with other law enforcement agencies.

On Oct. 2, a sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department identified one of the suspects as 25-year-old San Francisco resident Shaquille Dangelo Dumetz, Torrez said. Milpitas police detectives obtained a warrant for Dumetz’s arrest but could not find him.

San Francisco police arrested Dumetz in San Francisco on Tuesday and drove him to Milpitas, where detectives interviewed him about the automobile burglaries, Torrez said.

Dumetz was booked into Santa Clara County jail for the warrant. He is being held at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas on $50,000 bail, according to online jail records.
